Follow Me international

Just had a question about setting up a follow me account if I live outside of the USA. If I put in a European Follow Me number and someone from USA calls my whistle number will the number be pushed to my Euro number without accruing extra charges from the caller? How does the follow me call actually work? Is it through the internet or through the callers phone network?

EDIT: This information was not correct. Please see below for the real answer. Sorry for the mixup!

    Velnerj,

If a non-Whistle caller in the United States calls a Whistle number, and is then forwarded via Follow Me to a European number, the caller will be charged for the international call. This is because once Follow Me is activated, the calls are transferred off our platform. They're still calling internationally, and it goes through the caller's phone network.

This can be a problem for some people. If you're planning to communicate regularly with the US while in Europe, it might be a good idea for your correspondent to get a Whistle account too; Whistle-to-Whistle calls are always free, no matter where the callers are. I know the last time I was in Europe, it was a good idea to save money however I could!

Yes, you can call to the US from Europe and it will be charged to you.

Velnerj: oops! Sorry, but the information about Follow Me wasn't right. Here's what you needed to know, straight from the engineers:

The caller will pay any U.S. charges (since the caller is in the U.S.) but the international call charges will be charged to the whistle subscriber. Also, it is not through the internet. It's through the regular phone network with our international provider.

    Sorry again for the mixup!

Thanks Catherine! Is there any charge for a US to US call that originates in Europe? I do not believe so, but I wanted to confirm. Thanks!

    Seema,

No, there wouldn't be any charges from Whistle. You might incur data charges from WiFi or the 3G, but the call itself would be free. Hope that helps!

Thanks! Are there any problems with the service in southern Spain at the moment?

    Seema,

None to our knowledge. You should know that the Movistar network in Spain discourages VoIP activity (or actively blocks it), so it might be best to avoid that one if you can, but otherwise service should be uninterrupted. Have a good time!

    Was the original question answered?

Can a follow me number be outside the US?

If so, are calls forwarded to that follow me number charged to the caller or to the account holder?

Since I'd presume it is to the account holder, then: are the charges the same as the usual rates shown for other international calls?

    bhyde,

Yes, it was. The correct answer was:

The caller will pay any U.S. charges (since the caller is in the U.S.) but the international call charges will be charged to the Whistle subscriber.

And yes, the charges should be the same as the usual international rates.
